ENGINE Ford record
indicate that on 1May'42 motor # 26207 was the first to be painted
M-4084-G Grey paint. On 24Sep'42 Ford started using M-1788-H Grey paint (
same as the 9N tractor ) on GPW engines. The records do not show what
paint was used for the GPW motors before #26207. The GP used the 9N Grey (
M-1788-H ) on the motor and this may have been carried though to the first
GPW's. Ford motor assembly records show paint # M-1788 Grey for 9N and
Ford designed 4 cyls. before GPW # 26207 and paint number M-1788-H Grey
after the 24Sep'42 date for GPW and Tractor motors. ( Supplied By Tom

O/Drab VEP* Ford used the Willys Chassis (Frame). GPW stamped Willys frames have been found up to GPW 15064. This is possibly one of the last Willys frames used. If you have a later Ford Stamped W-O frame contact me. Note:- GPW 14944 has a pure Early Ford stamped frame. This may have something to do with different Ford production plants. The vehicle identification number (VIN) can be found on the left side frame rail, at the front, near the left motor mount. The number, typically, looks like *GPWxxx* but there are many variations. |

GENERATOR Download either the TM-10-1348 Ford List or SNL-G503 which is on the Main Page Generators Used on Both Ford & Willys From Ford
documents, the Ford made generator with sealed bearings was started on
June 16, '42. Prior to this date Autolite generators ( GEG-5001A and maybe
GEG-5002D ) were used. NOTE - there is no data that I have seen showing
the Autolite made generator GEG-5002D was ever used in a GPW but it may
have been so more research needs done on this point. On the second GPW
contract 20,184 non Ford made generators were used before the Ford made
generators started to be used in the production of GPWs. |

Sparton R2-14 Originally I had these as NOT "F" marked, however, it has recently come to light that as there are only two bolts of this size ( TWO (2) 1/4-28 x 5/8" bolts ) fitted to the jeep and that have been found fitted to a Reykjavik, Iceland find jeep, it would appear that at some stage these bolts were indeed "F" marked. It should be noted that as these "F" marked bolts are so rare there's a possibility that these were phased out over the production of the Ford made jeeps.

Egg Shell - Black *** PurOlater Type, Unprimed under Black with silver stencil marks of PD-5106 not PD-51 on top and INLET in silver "PD-5101" was used for both Dodges and MB's after Ford began to use the Purolator on the GPW. Before Ford began using them they were only marked PD-51...there was no reason to use the "01" or "06". Purolator began using PD-5106 to denote oil filters meant for GPW's since they had a Ford decal. The 5101 denoted the standard filter (two decals). If you can't find such a washer, you can "tin" the washer in a thin solder. Actual start date is uncertain at this time, however, on a GPW the radio wiring junction box started in Mid '43 ( Lloyd White says with the use by Ford of the ACM type 1 body) |

A Little History on Willys- Ford Composite Tubs and Bantam Trailers
On March 10, 1941, Auburn-Central was awarded a contract to produce 1,600 Jeep bodies for Willys Overland Motors, and by the end of April, Auburn-Central built Jeep body tubs were used in Willys’ Toledo, Ohio assembly plant. Auburn-Central’s president, Harry Woodhead, was replaced by Gaunders P. Jones on June 23, 1941 and the firm continued its preparations to gear up for wartime production.
On August, 4, 1941, Willys-Overland ordered another 16,000 Jeep bodies from Auburn-Central, which was followed up in November by another order for 11,000 units. Auburn-Central’s board of directors made a patriotic gesture on March 30, 1942 when they renamed the firm the American-Central Manufacturing Co. Production of all consumer-destined steel products was halted and the firm devoted itself to military products.
For the remainder of hostilities, American Central manufactured Jeep bodies, ¼ ton Bantam trailers, and wing assemblies, bomb bay doors, gun turret decks, collector rings, and carburettor air ducts for the Consolidated-Vultee B-24 Liberator Bomber, a product of the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, commonly known as Convair, which resulted from a 1943 merger between Vultee and Consolidated Aircraft. Over 18,000 B-24 Liberators were built during the war, making it the most popular bomber of World War II.
From the fall of 1943, when they started supplying Jeep tubs to Ford, through 1948, Central Manufacturing was the sole producer of Jeep bodies. A composite Jeep tub that combined the best features of the Ford and Willys-Overland tubs began production in January of 1944.
As the 325,000th Jeep body was mounted to a waiting Willys chassis, the employees of American Central were awarded with the coveted Army-Navy “E” Award in a special ceremony that took place on July 22, 1944. The plant’s other accomplishments included the completion of 200,000 Bantam ¼-ton trailer bodies and the countless wing sub-assemblies that had been produced for the B-24 Liberator and Vultee A-31 Vengeance.
In a sign of good faith, Willys-Overland ordered 25,000 post-war Jeep bodies from Central on August 23, 1944.
The employees of American-Central received their second Army-Navy “E” award on January 16, 1945. The E-award was the Army-Navy Award for Excellence in War Production and was normally awarded when a firm completed a large order for the US War effort or filled an order in a short period of time.
At the ceremony, the
employees would be given an enamelled pin mounted on a card certifying their
contribution to the war effort with a message from the president. The
employer would be presented with an “E’ flag and banner and outstanding
employees would be presented with a special certificate.
