The General Mechanics Tools set was the set the unit mechanic would have issued to him. Specifically most Tables of Organization and Equipment authorized every automotive mechanic in the unit one of these sets. This was the mechanics "personal" tool set and they would also have access to the more extensive (and different) tools of the Unit Sets (which were shared among all of the mechanics in the unit.

The scans are from Army Service Forces Catalogue ORD 6 SNL G-27 Section 2 Tools, Maintenance for Repair of Motor Vehicles Section 2 - Tool-Sets (Common), Specialists' and Organizational dated 1 July 1944. There are other late war versions of the ORD 6 SNL G-27 but I do not think they differed substantially from what is shown here. For an early war set there is very little information available at this time.
